NSF awards $20M for scientists to deploy AI to deal with huge optimization challenges

The Nationwide Science Basis has awarded $20 million over five many years to the Georgia Institute of Technology, the College of California, Berkeley and the University of Southern California to set up the Countrywide Artificial Intelligence (AI) Institute for Advancements in Optimization. The award is amid 11 new Countrywide AI Analysis Institutes introduced these days by NSF.
The AI Institute for Developments in Optimization aims to deliver a paradigm change in automated choice-generating at large scales by fusing AI and mathematical optimization, to reach breakthroughs that neither subject can obtain independently.
“The frequent power outages in response to wildfires in the Western United States highlighted the value of resilient distribution of electrical power,” claimed Alper Atamturk, the UC Berkeley direct for the new institute and chair of the Section of Industrial Engineering and Operations Investigate (IEOR). “We also observed the challenges in supply chains early in the pandemic when PPEs and medical equipment could not be shipped to hospitals. By unifying data-pushed and product-pushed methods at the core of AI and operations analysis, the institute will assist provide the following era of command and optimization algorithms for operating energy grids with dispersed renewable technology, and for planning and working economical and resilient offer chains.”
Pascal Van Hentenryck, professor and affiliate chair for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Ga Tech’s University of Industrial and Systems Engineering, is the lead principal investigator of the AI institute. The institute features 10 UC Berkeley college associates, which includes co-principal investigator Dorit Hochbaum, professor in the IEOR division.
“UC Berkeley is a chief in AI, device understanding and optimization,” stated Atamturk. “We are delighted to sign up for forces with interdisciplinary analysis groups at Ga Tech and USC to advance AI and optimization systems to handle grand problems in very constrained configurations such as logistics and supply chains, strength and sustainability, and circuit structure and regulate.”
To remodel final decision-creating at large scales, the institute will develop techniques that not only forecast and quantify uncertainty, but also continuously learn and explanation to establish the most effective solutions for the difficulties at hand. The other UC Berkeley school customers in the institute are professors Pieter Abbeel in electrical engineering and laptop sciences (EECS) and IEOR, Laurent El Ghaoui in EECS and IEOR, Paul Grigas in IEOR, Borivoje Nikolic in EECS, Barna Saha in IEOR, Max Shen in IEOR, Raluca Scarlat in nuclear engineering, and Vladimir Stojanovic in EECS.
In addition to Georgia Tech and USC, the institute delivers together associates from Clark Atlanta University, Spelman Faculty and the College of Texas at Arlington.
